The City of Klang is also known as Malaysia royal city and is the former capital of Selangor province.
Klang named after the river that goes straight through the town. It is situated about 32 km west from the Capital Kuala Lumpur, which is where the river begins.
Klang was famous for its tin mining which expanded very fast in the 19th century due to high demand. Caused by the greed of controlling the power of the tin mines the Selangor civil was started in 1867 and ended in 1874.
The Port of Kuala Lumpur is called port Klang and is located 45 km outside the city center and lies at the western end of the Federal Highway. It will take approximately one hour to get from the Port Klang to Kuala Lumpur city center. It also serves as the port for the Klang Valley, Malaysia's most developed region where the capital Kuala Lumpur is located.
In maritime terms, Port Klang actually consists of three distinct ports. The port nearest to Port Klang town is known as the South Port. There is also a North Port and the newly developed Westport located on an island just off the coast of Port Klang.
The cruise terminal “Passenger Cruise Terminal” is at Westport and is located in the port area where the Federal Highway (which is a two-lane city road at this point) meets the sea. There are two ferry links to Dumai and Tanjung Balai Asahan both Sumatra, Indonesia. Port Klang and Klang town is very popular as Food Haven locals. The largest AEON shopping center in Southeast Asia is operational in 2008 and the largest Wholesale city called GM Klang is projected to commence its wholesale business for products such as fashion apparels, all kinds of bags, ladies accessories, watches, building materials, electrical and electronic devices and more. Like most port cities, Port Klang has a seedy feel to it and most of its buildings and structures are maritime-related, such as warehouses, storage tanks and offices.
While Dumai allows for visa on arrival, Tanjung Balai Asahan does NOT issue visas on arrival and travellers need a visa in advance.
Malaysian citizens do not need a visa for a stay of up to 30 days and can enter at either port.
