Antalya

Amasra boasts a captivating setting on a fortified promontory that juts into the Black Sea, making it one of the region’s most beautiful towns. Its history dates back to the 6th century BC when a Greek colony was documented by Homer, before coming under the control of the Byzantines as part of the Pontic Kingdom. Once it was taken by the Ottoman rulers, Amasra’s commercial importance declined, transforming into the laid-back, leisurely town seen today.

Amasra’s atmospheric old town can easily be explored on foot, with old houses and fortifications scattered over the hills, and a small old stone bridge linking the mainland to a nearby island. Visit the Fatih mosque, which originally served as a church, then explore the ancient theatre and castle of Amasra, which was built during the Roman period. Also take the time to wander the intriguing Amasra Museum which exhibits artefacts from Roman, Byzantine, Genoese and Ottoman periods.

Boat trips along the spectacular coastline are an idyllic way to spend a day in Amasra. There are a couple of offshore islands to explore, including Rabbit Island with its large population of furry friends. Or you can take the road east to Cakraz - a typical Turkish fishing village - where you can soak up the panoramic mountain views, feast on freshly caught seafood, and take a dip at the nearby beaches of Bozköy and Akkonak.

Amasra doesn’t see the large tourist crowds of many of Turkey’s other beach resorts, maintaining a relaxed and authentic atmosphere, and our shore excursions are an ideal way to explore the sights and flavours of this captivating Black Sea town.
