Duration: 8 hours
When you arrive in the port of Izmir, your guide will be waiting with your luxury vehicle for your shore excursion to Pergamon and two of the country's most celebrated archaeological sites - the Acropolis and the Asclepion.
Pergamon served as the capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon during the Hellenistic Period and lies near the modern Turkish city of Bergama. Many of Pergamon's buildings date to the time of Eumenes II (197-159 BC), including the famed library, the terrace of the spectacular hillside theater, the Main Palace, the Altar of Zeus and the Propylaeum of the Temple of Athena. In the early Christian era, Pergamon’s church was a major center of Christianity and was one of the Seven Churches of Revelation.
Built on a steep hill, the Acropolis is reached along a winding road that ascends around 300 meters, and in this uniquely designed city, the religious, official and commercial buildings have all been built side-by-side. Five cisterns and an arsenal lie on the hill, below which is the Temple of Athena, as well as the Library and the Temple of Trajan. The Altar of Zeus is situated on a terrace below these buildings, while one of the steepest Amphitheatres in the world can also be found here. The lower section of the acropolis is home to the gymnasium and the Temple of Demeter.
We will also visit the Asclepion, one of the world's most famous ancient medical centers. It's ruins feature beautifully carved marble columns, a large theater, and stone-framed sacred pools.
At the conclusion of the tour you will be transported back to the port of Izmir.
