Visiting: Ancient city of Ephesus, Temple of Artemis
Duration: 4 hours
As you depart the port of Çeşme, your professional local guide will be waiting for you with a name placard for easy recognition, ready to take you on a tour of the ancient sights in the Ephesus and Selcuk areas.
Our first stop is the Ancient City of Ephesus, dating back to the 10th century BC and home to some of the best preserved ruins in the world today. Your guide will escort you through the Odeon, the Temple of Hadrian and the beautifully adorned Celsius Library, and explain the history of the city and the lifestyle of those who once lived there. A must-see is the Great Theater which once held up to 25,000 people and is still used for concerts today.
Temple of Artemis
The Temple of Artemis is listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and was built by the Lycian King, Kreisos, back in the Hellenistic Age. While some of its ruins are now housed in London's British Museum, many of its beautifully sculpted marble columns are still scattered across the swamp land, allowing you to appreciate the immense grandeur of the temple in its day.
Don't miss an opportunity to visit the Terrace Houses section within the Ancient Ruins of Ephesus. It has an extra entrance fee of 15 USD per person but is highly recommended for those interested in getting a glimpse into the lifestyle of the city's wealthy residents. Of particular note is its oldest building, "The houses of the rich Romans", which dates back to the 1st century BC and exhibits amazing mosaics and frescoes, as well as its famed clay pipe water and heating systems. Please be aware that in this section there are over 100 stairs so we do not recommend it for people with physical disabilities. Allow a minimum of 30 minutes to visit.
